Application using the pen technology to complete check lists for compliance

Compliancetrac uses Datatrac’s Digital Pen Technology to provide the records necessary where proof of compliance is needed.

The operator uses the digital pen to write on cards, check lists or report forms which have been pre-printed onto “smart” paper. The paper is covered with a unique system of small dots; the pen has a video camera placed under the nib and the pen strokes are accurately positioned on the report card or form by a navigational fix by means of the nib’s position in relation to the dots.

In addition to the video camera the pen incorporates a computer mother board and a battery. The pen is capable of storing up to 40 separate forms at any one time. As the operator performs his task he records his actions using the pen. When the pen is placed in its docking station which is attached to a computer a replicate of the report form or checklist is immediately downloaded as a JPEG image onto the computer. The captured image is accurately timed and the operator saves time in not having to duplicate his task by entering the record of task performance into the computer.

The image is timed accurately to coincide with the pen stoke recording when the task, observation or approval was completed. Thus an audit trail of the tasks performed on board is recorded and proof available for later review or for immediate transmission ashore.
